What F2E1 means on a Maytag washer
The F2E1 error code indicates the control board has detected one or more keys on the User Interface (UI) board held in an actuated state for 15 or more consecutive seconds. This is a timing-based fault. The machine is not detecting a single momentary press but a sustained signal, which the control board interprets as a stuck or shorted key. The first diagnostic step is TEST #4: Consoles and Indicators (page 16), which systematically checks the UI board and its communication with the main control.
For homeowners, this means one of the buttons on your washer's control panel is either physically stuck in the pressed position or is sending a continuous electrical signal as if it were being held down. This can prevent the washer from operating normally and will typically lock out other functions while the fault is active.
The root cause can be mechanical, a button physically jammed by detergent residue or damage, or electrical, such as a faulty UI board sending a false signal. Because the code triggers after a 15-second window, intermittent sticking may not immediately cause the error but will eventually register during a cycle.

Common causes of F2E1
- 01
Physically stuck or jammed key on the User Interface panel
Wiring / connectionDetergent residue, moisture, or physical damage can cause a button to remain depressed or bind in the actuated position. This is the most common cause and directly matches the 15-consecutive-second trigger condition.
- 02
Faulty User Interface (UI) board
Part replacementA defective UI board can produce a continuous electrical signal on a key input line even when no button is physically pressed, mimicking a stuck key to the main control board. Replacing the UI board resolves this.
- 03
Damaged or shorted wiring harness between UI board and main control
Part replacementA pinched, chafed, or shorted wire in the harness connecting the User Interface to the main control board can create a false sustained key-press signal. TEST #4 includes checks for this connection.
- 04
Failed main control board misreading UI input
Part replacementIn less common cases, the main control board itself may be misinterpreting normal UI signals as a continuous keypress. This is typically only confirmed after the UI board and wiring harness have been ruled out through TEST #4.
