This error is specific to models equipped with a card-based payment or access system. The machine will not run a cycle until the communication link is restored.

Start by cycling power to rule out a transient fault. If the code returns, inspect the connector at the AA3 port on the control board for loose seating, bent pins, or corrosion and reseat it firmly. If the connector looks good, check the wiring harness from the card reader to the board for any visible damage. If wiring and connectors are intact, the card reader module or the control board may need to be replaced.

Repair costs vary depending on the root cause. If only the connector needs to be reseated or cleaned, there may be no parts cost at all, with only a service call fee if a technician is involved. A replacement card reader module typically runs in the range of $50 to $200 in parts. Control board replacement is more expensive, often ranging from $150 to $400 or more for parts alone, plus labor.

A power cycle is the first recommended step and can clear the code if the fault was caused by a temporary communication dropout. Turn the washer off, unplug it for one to two minutes, then restore power. If the FPE3 code returns after the reset, there is likely a physical fault in the connector, wiring, or one of the components that requires hands-on inspection.

The washer will typically not allow a cycle to start while this error is active, so continued use is not immediately possible.
