Maytag Washer Error Code uL
Unbalanced Load
Unbalanced Load - machine/motor control detects an off-balance load; washer runs a mini-cycle to rebalance. If unsuccessful, uL flashes until lid is opened.
First step from the service manual
Redistribute the load and verify the washer is placed on a level surface.

What uL means on a Maytag washer
The uL code on a Maytag top-load washer stands for Unbalanced Load. During the spin cycle, the machine control board and motor control unit continuously monitor drum rotation and motor feedback to detect irregular movement caused by an off-balance load. When the system identifies that the laundry inside the drum is distributed unevenly, it interrupts the spin cycle and initiates an automatic mini-cycle designed to redistribute the load. This mini-cycle agitates the contents in an attempt to rebalance them before resuming the spin.
If the automatic rebalancing mini-cycle successfully redistributes the load, the washer resumes normal operation without any further intervention required. However, if the off-balance condition persists after the mini-cycle completes, the uL code will flash repeatedly on the display and the washer will halt operation. At that point, the machine will remain paused and the uL indicator will continue to flash until the lid is opened, which signals to the control board that a manual correction is being made.
The most common root causes include overloading the drum, washing a single large item such as a comforter or towel by itself, or running the washer on an unlevel surface where the cabinet vibration amplifies drum imbalance. In some cases, worn suspension rods or a damaged tub bearing can cause chronic uL errors even with properly sized and distributed loads, since these components are responsible for dampening drum movement during high-speed spin.

Common causes of uL
- 01
Uneven load distribution
Wiring / connectionHeavy items like jeans or towels can clump together on one side of the drum during the spin cycle. Redistributing the items by hand and restarting will typically resolve this immediately.
- 02
Single large or bulky item
Wiring / connectionWashing one large item such as a comforter, blanket, or bath mat by itself gives it no counterweight, making balance nearly impossible. Adding a few similar-weight items or redistributing the load usually resolves the issue.
- 03
Washer not level
Wiring / connectionIf the washer is sitting on an unlevel floor or the leveling legs are not properly adjusted, even a moderately loaded drum can trigger chronic imbalance errors. Check all four corners with a bubble level and adjust the legs accordingly.
- 04
Worn or broken suspension rods
Part replacementSuspension rods support the tub and absorb vibration during spin. When they wear out or lose their dampening ability, the tub moves excessively and triggers repeated uL codes even with balanced loads. Replacing the suspension rod set is required.
- 05
Overloaded drum
Wiring / connectionPacking too many items into the washer reduces the ability of clothes to shift and balance during the mini-cycle. Reducing the load size and running a new cycle is the fix.
