E208 indicates a suction temperature sensor breakaway fault. The system detected that the difference between the initial suction temperature reading and the current reading was less than 2°C for 30 consecutive minutes. This points to the sensor being physically detached from the suction line, a failed sensor, or a wiring issue preventing accurate temperature tracking.

Operating the heat pump with E208 active is not recommended. Without accurate suction temperature data, the control system cannot properly protect the compressor from conditions like liquid slugging or overheating. Continued operation under a faulty sensor condition risks compressor damage, which is a far more costly repair than addressing the sensor fault.

Repair costs depend on the root cause. If the sensor simply needs to be reattached to its holder, the cost is primarily a service call fee, typically in the range of $75 to $150. If the suction temperature sensor itself has failed and needs replacement, parts and labor combined generally range from $150 to $350. Control board replacement, if required, is a more significant expense and can range from $400 to $800 or more depending on the model.

A homeowner can visually check whether the suction temperature sensor and its holder are properly attached to the suction pipe, which is the first recommended diagnostic step. However, measuring resistance values and working near refrigerant lines and live electrical components is best handled by a qualified technician. If the sensor needs replacement, a technician should perform the work to ensure the correct part is fitted and the system is properly tested afterward.

A reset may temporarily clear the error code, but if the underlying cause, such as a detached sensor or failed thermistor, has not been corrected, the fault will return once the system monitors suction temperature again over a 30-minute window. The root cause must be diagnosed and resolved before the error will clear permanently.
