Error code 81 E indicates an inverter compressor initial start failure. The inverter PBA attempted to start the compressor but detected a fault, which can include a short in the U, V, or W motor wires, a failed IPM pin on the inverter board, or an internal compressor winding fault. The refrigerator will not cool normally while this error is active.

The refrigerator will not maintain safe cooling temperatures while error 81 E is active because the compressor is not running. Food safety becomes a concern within a few hours, especially for perishables. It is best to move temperature-sensitive items to another refrigerator and address the fault promptly rather than continuing to use the appliance in this state.

A power reset by unplugging the refrigerator for several minutes may temporarily clear the error display, and the unit may attempt a compressor restart after the 8-minute rest period. However, if the underlying fault such as a wiring short, failed inverter PBA, or damaged compressor is still present, the error will return once the board tries to start the compressor again. A reset is a useful first diagnostic step but is not a repair.

Some steps are DIY-friendly, such as checking whether the compressor is hot and allowing an 8-minute rest period before restarting, and visually inspecting the CN04 wiring connector on the inverter PBA for loose or damaged terminals. However, testing compressor winding resistance and diagnosing a failed inverter PBA or IPM requires a multimeter and comfort working with refrigeration electronics. Compressor replacement involves refrigerant handling and must be performed by a licensed technician.

Repair costs vary depending on the root cause. If only a wiring connector repair is needed, costs are relatively low, typically in the range of a service call fee.
