The 8CA1 code means the washer has detected a disconnection or communication failure involving the external MEMS PBA, which is a sensor board responsible for monitoring motion and vibration. The fault is triggered when the main control board cannot receive data from this component. It is most often caused by a loose wire connection, though a failed MEMS PBA or main PBA can also be responsible.

A power reset may temporarily clear the display, but if the underlying wiring or component fault is still present, the 8CA1 code will return once the washer attempts to use the MEMS sensor again. A reset is not a fix and the root cause should be diagnosed and corrected to prevent the error from recurring.

If only a wire connection needs to be reseated, there may be little to no parts cost, though a service call fee would still apply. Replacing the MEMS PBA typically costs between $80 and $200 depending on the part and labor rates in your area. If the main PBA also requires replacement, total repair costs could range from $200 to $450 or more.

If you are comfortable working inside an appliance, you can start by checking that all wire connectors leading to the external MEMS PBA are fully seated and undamaged. Reseating a loose connector may resolve the fault without any parts replacement. However, if the board itself or the main PBA needs replacement, that work is best handled by a technician familiar with Samsung washer electronics.

It is not recommended to continue running the washer while this fault is active. The MEMS PBA provides motion and balance data that the control system relies on during spin cycles, and operating without it could lead to undetected imbalance or improper cycle behavior.
