Error code 8-4 indicates a drain motor electrical problem. The control board has detected an issue in the drain motor circuit, which can include a loose wiring connection, an open motor winding, a damaged pump impeller, an open fuse on the control board, or a failed drain motor drive circuit on the control board itself.

It is not recommended to continue running the dishwasher with this code active. If the drain motor circuit has failed, the unit may be unable to drain water from the tub, which could result in standing water and potential overflow. Disconnect power and address the fault before running additional cycles.

Repair costs vary depending on the failed component. A drain pump assembly replacement typically runs in the range of $100 to $250 including parts and labor. Control board replacement is generally more expensive, often ranging from $200 to $400 or more depending on the model and labor rates in your area. Repairs limited to a loose connection or wiring fix will be on the lower end of that scale.

Start by unplugging the dishwasher or disconnecting power at the breaker. Then check the resistance of the drain motor windings using a multimeter and inspect all connectors in the drain motor wiring harness for looseness or corrosion. If the motor winding is open, the pump assembly needs replacement. If the wiring checks out and the motor tests good, the control board fuse or drive circuit should be evaluated.

A reset may temporarily clear the code, but it will return as soon as the control board runs the drain cycle and detects the same electrical fault again. The underlying cause in the drain motor circuit must be diagnosed and repaired for the code to be permanently resolved.
