Whirlpool Range Error Code F3 E4

F3 E4 means the control board detected an open circuit from the bottom oven temperature sensor. The sensor is a resistance-based probe that the board reads to monitor oven temperature. When the resistance is out of range or reads as an open, the board logs this code and disables the oven. The cause is most often a failed sensor or a break in the wiring harness connected to it.

The stovetop burners are typically unaffected and can still be used safely. The oven itself should not be used while F3 E4 is active because the control board cannot read oven temperature, meaning it cannot regulate heat accurately or shut off at the correct temperature. Running the oven without a functioning sensor creates a risk of overheating.

Disconnect power to the range, then locate the bottom oven sensor connector behind the range or at the control board. Set your multimeter to measure resistance (ohms) and probe across the two sensor pins. At room temperature, a good sensor reads between 1000 and 1100 ohms - approximately 1080 ohms is normal. A reading of OL (open loop), zero, or a number far outside that range confirms the sensor has failed and needs replacement. If the sensor reads correctly, move on to inspecting the harness and connectors for damage.

Start by pulling the range away from the wall, disconnecting power, and locating the bottom oven sensor connector. Measure resistance across the two sensor pins with a multimeter - you should read around 1080 ohms at room temperature. If the reading is open (OL) or far outside that range, replace the bottom oven temperature sensor. If resistance is correct at the sensor but the code persists, inspect the wiring harness for breaks or burned insulation and check that all connectors are seated fully. If everything tests good, the control board may need replacement.

A replacement bottom oven temperature sensor typically costs between $20 and $60 for the part, and replacing it is a manageable DIY repair requiring only a screwdriver and a multimeter to confirm the diagnosis. If the wiring harness is damaged, a replacement harness is usually in the same price range. A service call to have a technician diagnose and replace the sensor generally runs $150 to $300 depending on your location and the cost of the part.
