F3 E5 means the control board detected a shorted condition in the bottom oven temperature sensor circuit. The sensor, which normally reads around 1080 ohms at room temperature, is reporting resistance below the acceptable range. This prevents the board from accurately tracking oven temperature, so it shuts down heating and displays the fault code.

The oven section should not be used while F3 E5 is active. A shorted sensor means the control board cannot accurately read oven temperature, which removes the primary safeguard against overheating. Surface burners on a gas or electric range may still function, but operating the oven without a working temperature sensor is unsafe and can cause damage to the appliance or create a fire hazard.

Disconnect power to the range, locate the bottom oven sensor connector inside the back of the oven cavity or at the control board, and use a multimeter set to ohms across the two sensor pins. At room temperature, a good sensor reads approximately 1080 ohms. Readings far below this range confirm a short in the sensor itself. If the sensor reads correctly, reconnect it and inspect the full wiring harness for damage between the sensor and the control board.
