The oL code stands for Overloaded. It appears when the machine or motor control detects that the load in the drum is too large for the washer to handle, or when the basket cannot disengage from the drive mechanism due to mechanical friction. The washer stops the cycle automatically to prevent damage to the motor and drive components. Reducing the load size and restarting is the first recommended step.

Unplugging the washer for one to two minutes and restarting can clear the oL code temporarily, but if the underlying cause is still present the error will return once the cycle begins. A reset is only a lasting fix if the original trigger was a genuinely overloaded drum that has since been corrected. If the fault returns after a reset with a normal load size, further diagnosis of the drive and clutch system is needed.

If the cause is simply an overloaded drum, there is no repair cost. If a clutch assembly replacement is needed, parts and labor typically range from around 150 dollars to 300 dollars depending on the model and local labor rates. A drive motor replacement is a more involved repair and can range from approximately 200 dollars to 450 dollars or more. If the error returns with a normal load, inspect the drive mechanism for mechanical binding, worn clutch components, or debris preventing the basket from moving freely. Persistent oL faults with properly sized loads typically point to a clutch assembly or motor issue that requires component replacement.

You should not force the washer to continue running when the oL code is active. The control stops the cycle intentionally to protect the motor, clutch, and drive components from damage caused by excessive strain. Attempting to override or repeatedly restart without addressing the root cause can accelerate wear on those components and lead to a more costly repair.
