E:23 indicates a fault in the drain pump circuit. The dishwasher's control system has detected an electrical problem with the drain pump (M3), which is responsible for removing water from the tub. This can be caused by a failed pump motor, damaged wiring, or a faulty power module.

It is not recommended to continue running the dishwasher with an active E:23 code. If the drain pump is not functioning, water will remain in the tub and could lead to overflow, odors, or secondary damage. Address the fault before resuming normal use.

A reset may temporarily clear the code from the display, but if the underlying fault in the drain pump circuit has not been resolved, the error will return when the dishwasher attempts to drain again. Clearing the code without fixing the root cause does not restore proper drain function.

Some causes of E:23 are DIY-friendly. Checking for debris jamming the pump impeller or inspecting connectors for corrosion requires basic tools and no special training. Measuring pump resistance with a multimeter (looking for approximately 80.5 ohms across any two terminals) is also a straightforward test. Replacing the pump motor or power module requires more confidence with appliance disassembly and working near electrical components.

If only cleaning the pump or repairing a connector is needed, costs can be minimal. A replacement drain pump typically falls in the range of $40 to $100 for the part, with additional labor costs if a technician is hired. A power module replacement is generally more expensive, often ranging from $80 to $200 or more for the part depending on the model.
