This is detected either when the drain cycle starts or while it is running. The cause is typically a jammed impeller, heavy debris buildup, a wiring fault, or a failed motor.

A reset may temporarily clear the i5E code, but the error will return if the underlying cause is not corrected. If the impeller is jammed or the motor is faulty, the dishwasher will detect the problem again as soon as it attempts to drain. Always diagnose and repair the root cause before relying on a reset.

If the fix is simply removing a jammed object from the impeller, there may be no parts cost at all. If the drain pump motor needs replacement, parts alone typically range from $40 to $120 depending on the model, with professional labor adding $100 to $200 or more. Wiring harness repairs generally fall at the lower end of the cost range.

Start by checking the drain motor wire harness and connector pins at the control board for looseness or corrosion. Then remove the drain filter and inspect the impeller for any foreign objects or debris that could be blocking rotation. If the wiring and impeller are clear but the error persists, the drain pump motor may need to be replaced.

It is not recommended to continue running the dishwasher with an active i5E error. This code indicates the drain pump cannot operate correctly, which means the appliance may not drain water properly and water could remain standing in the tub.
