E53 indicates a motor fault where the drive motor stopped during a cycle. The control board detected that the motor failed to keep running, which can be caused by an overheated motor due to an overloaded drum, a wiring fault at key connectors, a blown thermal limiter, or a failed centripetal switch inside the motor on push-button-start models. The specific diagnostic path depends on whether your dryer has a rotary or push-button start.

A reset may temporarily clear E53 if the root cause was motor overheating from an overloaded drum, since the thermal protector can self-reset after cooling. However, if the fault is caused by a blown thermal limiter, a faulty centripetal switch, a wiring problem, or a bad control board, the error will return as soon as the dryer attempts to run again. Clearing the code without addressing the underlying issue does not fix the problem.

Repair costs vary widely depending on the failed component. Replacing a thermal limiter is generally an inexpensive repair, with parts typically ranging from $10 to $30 and modest labor time. Motor replacement is more expensive, with parts commonly ranging from $80 to $200 or more depending on the model, plus labor if a technician is hired. Electronic control board replacement tends to fall in a similar or higher range than motor replacement, making it worthwhile to fully diagnose before ordering parts.

Some causes of E53 are DIY-friendly. Reducing the load size, waiting for the motor to cool, and restarting the dryer costs nothing and should always be the first step. Inspecting and reseating wiring connectors at the J2 harness, motor, and door switch is also within reach for most handy homeowners. However, testing the thermal limiter requires a multimeter, and replacing the motor or control board is more involved work that many people prefer to leave to a qualified technician.

You should not attempt to operate the dryer while E53 is active. The code indicates the motor stopped mid-cycle, and continuing to run the appliance without diagnosing the cause could worsen a wiring fault, damage the motor further, or in the case of a thermal limiter issue, indicate a temperature problem that poses a fire risk. Diagnose and resolve the fault before resuming normal use.
