E81 indicates a program selector or encoder fault. The main control board is detecting an abnormal or stuck signal from the cycle selector or encoder assembly. The fault can originate from the wiring at connectors J7, J8, or J10, the encoder, the cycle selector, or the main board itself.

A power reset may temporarily clear the code, but if an underlying hardware fault exists in the encoder, cycle selector, or wiring, the error will return. A reset is not a fix for E81 and should not be relied on to restore normal dryer operation long term.

If the fix is simply reseating a loose connector, there may be no parts cost at all. Encoder and cycle selector parts typically run in the range of $20 to $80 depending on the model. A main control board replacement, if needed, generally costs between $80 and $200 for the part, plus labor if a technician is doing the work.

A knowledgeable DIYer can start by inspecting and reseating the wiring at edge connectors J7, J8, and J10, which requires no special tools and no parts. If the wiring is fine, replacing the encoder and cycle selector is a moderate repair that some DIYers can handle. Main board replacement is also straightforward but is a more expensive part, so confirming the other components are not the cause first is worthwhile.

The dryer is unlikely to operate normally while E81 is active, as the control board cannot reliably read cycle selection inputs. Attempting to run the dryer in this state is not recommended, since the selected program may not execute correctly.
