E263 indicates a compressor discharge temperature sensor breakaway fault. The system has detected a difference greater than 40°C between the digital compressor discharge temperature sensor and the fixed compressor 2 discharge temperature sensor. This typically means one of the sensors has physically separated from the discharge pipe and is no longer measuring actual refrigerant temperature. The system flags this condition to prevent unreliable compressor protection.

Running the heat pump with E263 active is not recommended. The discharge temperature sensors protect the compressors from overheating by providing accurate temperature data to the control system. With a separated or failed sensor, the control board cannot properly monitor compressor discharge conditions, which could allow an overtemperature situation to go undetected and potentially damage the compressor. It is best to address the fault before continuing normal operation.

If the sensor has simply come loose and only needs to be reattached and secured, the repair cost is primarily the technician labor charge, typically in the range of $75 to $200 depending on location and service provider. If the sensor itself has failed and needs replacement, parts and labor combined could range from $150 to $400. If wiring or connector damage is involved, costs may increase depending on the extent of the repair needed.

The sensor must be physically inspected, reattached, or replaced before the error will clear permanently.
