E264 indicates a compressor discharge temperature sensor breakaway fault. The system has detected a difference greater than 40°C between the discharge temperature reading from the digital compressor and fixed compressor 3. This differential typically occurs when one of the sensors has physically separated from its mounting location on the compressor discharge line, losing proper thermal contact.

Operating the system while this error is active is not recommended. The discharge temperature sensors protect the compressors from overheating by allowing the control board to monitor refrigerant conditions. A displaced or failed sensor means the system cannot accurately detect a potentially dangerous temperature rise, which could lead to compressor damage if the fault is left unaddressed.

A power reset may temporarily clear the error code, but it will return if the underlying cause has not been corrected. The control board continuously monitors the temperature differential between the two compressor discharge sensors, so if a sensor is still displaced or faulty after the reset, the E264 fault will reappear during operation. The physical condition of the sensors must be inspected and corrected before the code will clear permanently.

If you are comfortable working around HVAC equipment, you can inspect the compressor discharge temperature sensors to see if one has visibly pulled away from its mounting position and reattach it. However, accessing the compressor compartment and identifying the correct sensors requires familiarity with heat pump components. If the sensor itself is faulty or the wiring is damaged, a qualified technician should handle the replacement and verification.

If the fix is simply reattaching and securing a displaced sensor, labor costs may be relatively modest, typically in the range of $75 to $200 depending on the service provider and location. If a replacement discharge temperature sensor or mounting hardware is needed, parts can add $20 to $100 or more to the total. A control board replacement, if ultimately required, would significantly increase costs.
