The HE code on a Samsung washer signals a heater relay error in the washing heater circuit. It can be caused by a short circuit or open circuit in the heater element, loose or corroded terminal connections, a faulty temperature sensor, or overheating detected between 100 and 150 degrees Celsius. If all heater components test correctly, the fault may be in the relay on the main control board.

You should not continue using the washer while the HE code is active. The code can indicate a short circuit in the heater or an overheating condition that caused the control board to shut off power as a safety measure. Running the machine before the fault is resolved could cause further electrical damage or create a safety hazard.

Repair costs vary depending on which component has failed. Replacing a washing heater element typically runs in the range of $80 to $200 including parts and labor. A temperature sensor replacement is generally less expensive, often in the $50 to $120 range. A power reset, such as unplugging the washer for a few minutes and restarting it, may temporarily clear the display, but the HE code will return if the underlying fault is not repaired. Because this error involves a hardware failure in the heater circuit or control board relay, a reset alone is not a fix and the root cause must be addressed.
