Whirlpool Dishwasher Error Code SUDS

The SUDS code means the dishwasher has detected an excessive amount of soap suds inside the tub. This is identified either by the spray basket failing to reach normal spin speed due to foam resistance, or by the pressure sensor detecting a rising suds level. The code is almost always detergent-related and does not typically indicate a mechanical failure.

Resetting the dishwasher may clear the error code from the display temporarily, but it will not resolve the underlying cause. If excessive suds are still present in the tub or the detergent issue is not corrected, the SUDS code will return during the next cycle. Address the detergent type, quantity, and drain system before running another full wash.

In most cases, fixing a SUDS error costs nothing beyond the correct detergent. If the drain pump filter needs cleaning or the drain hose needs repositioning, those are typically no-cost or very low-cost corrections a homeowner can perform. If the drain pump or pressure sensor has been damaged by prolonged suds exposure and requires replacement, repair costs typically range from $100 to $300 depending on parts and labor in your area.

Start by canceling the current cycle and allowing the suds to settle. Check that you are using HE dishwasher detergent and that you are not using too much of it. Clean the drain pump filter and inspect the drain hose for blockages or kinks. Also confirm that the drain hose connection point does not exceed 8 feet (2.4 meters) in height. Once corrections are made, run a rinse-only cycle to flush remaining suds before resuming normal wash cycles.

It is best to stop the cycle when the SUDS code appears rather than continuing to run the machine. Excessive suds can impair the drain pump, cause water to overflow the tub, and prevent dishes from being cleaned or rinsed properly. Allow the suds to dissipate, correct the cause, and then restart.
