Whirlpool Washer Error Code HC

HC stands for Hot, Cold Reversed. It means the washer has detected that the hot and cold water inlet hoses are connected to the wrong ports on the back of the machine. The washer uses a temperature sensor to identify this condition and displays the code to prevent wash cycle problems. Correcting the hose connections will typically resolve the error.

A reset alone will not permanently clear the HC code if the inlet hoses are still reversed. The washer will detect the reversed water temperatures again at the start of the next cycle and redisplay the error. The hoses must be corrected first, and then the code will clear on its own once the machine completes its self-check.

In most cases, fixing the HC code costs nothing because it only requires reconnecting the existing hoses to the correct ports. If the hose connections are correct but the code persists and a faulty water temperature sensor is identified, repair costs for parts and labor can range from roughly $75 to $200 depending on the specific model and local service rates.

Turn off both water supply valves behind the washer, then disconnect and swap the two inlet hoses so that the hot supply line connects to the port labeled HOT and the cold supply line connects to the port labeled COLD. Tighten the connections securely, turn the water back on, check for leaks, and restart the washer. The HC code should clear once the machine confirms water is entering on the correct sides.

Running the washer with reversed hot and cold connections can cause problems beyond the error code. Hot water entering when cold water is expected can damage heat-sensitive fabrics, affect detergent performance, and produce poor wash results. It is best to correct the hose connections before running any cycles.
