The lid error code on a Whirlpool washer indicates one of three conditions: the lid was open when Start was pressed, Start was pressed after two back-to-back cycles without the lid ever being opened, or the control board cannot properly detect the lid switch opening and closing. It is both a user prompt and a diagnostic flag for the lid switch circuit. Closing the lid is always the first step to clearing it.

Closing the lid is the specified first step to clear the lid error display, and in many cases that is all that is needed. A power reset alone will not resolve the error if there is an underlying fault with the lid switch or its wiring, because the control board will continue to detect the same problem each time the machine runs. A proper diagnosis through TEST #8 is recommended if the error returns after closing the lid.

If the fix is simply closing the lid or reseating a loose wiring connector, there is no parts cost involved. A replacement lid switch typically costs in the range of $10 to $40 for the part itself. If a control board replacement is required, parts alone can range from $100 to $300 or more, with additional labor costs if a technician is hired. Getting a proper diagnosis through TEST #8 first will help avoid replacing parts unnecessarily.

Start by making sure the lid is fully closed and then press Start again. If the error clears, the fix was simply closing the lid. If the error returns, the diagnostic procedure known as TEST #8 should be performed to check the lid switch, its wiring harness, and the control board for faults. Depending on the results, you may need to replace the lid switch or address a wiring issue.
