The R-DEF. Error signals a fault in the defrost system of the fresh food compartment. It can be caused by a disconnected sensor connector, a failed contact, a blown thermal fuse, or a defrost cycle that ran past the 80-minute time limit. The main PCB monitors the heater circuit through connectors CN70 and CN71 and sets this code when it detects an abnormal resistance reading or a timeout condition.

A power reset may temporarily clear the error code display, but the underlying fault will cause the code to return if the defrost system issue is not repaired. If the error was triggered by the 80-minute timeout rather than a hard electrical failure, the code may not return immediately, but the root cause of slow defrosting still needs to be addressed.

Repair costs vary depending on which component has failed. A replacement bimetal thermal fuse is typically an inexpensive part, with DIY repair costs ranging from $10 to $40 for parts alone. A defrost heater replacement generally runs $30 to $100 in parts. If a main PCB replacement is needed or a technician is called, total costs including labor can range from $150 to $400 or more depending on your location and service rates.

Start by disconnecting CN70 and CN71 from the main PCB and measuring resistance between the CN70 White wire and the CN71 Orange wire. A correct reading falls between approximately 102 and 118 ohms (or 410 to 472 ohms on applicable models). A reading of 0 ohms means the heater is shorted and needs replacement. An infinite reading means there is an open circuit, most commonly a blown bimetal thermal fuse, broken wiring, or a disconnected connector.

The R-DEF. Error itself is not an immediate safety hazard, but leaving it unresolved can lead to significant frost buildup on the evaporator coils, reduced cooling performance, and potential food spoilage. A shorted defrost heater, indicated by a 0-ohm reading, should be repaired promptly to avoid additional electrical stress on the circuit.
