GE Washer Error Code E16

E16 indicates an over-trip fault in the motor drive system, meaning the control board detected that no valid speed signal was present from the motor and immediately shut off the drive bridge. The motor then coasts to a stop rather than completing its cycle. This is a protective shutdown designed to prevent damage to the motor and drive electronics. The first thing to check is whether all four shipping bolts have been removed from the back of the machine.

You should not attempt to run the washer while E16 is active, as the fault indicates the motor has already shut down due to a control system protection event. Continuing to force cycles without resolving the underlying cause could damage the motor, drive board, or drum components. Address the root cause before resuming normal use.

If the cause is simply shipping bolts that were never removed, there is no parts cost at all. If a speed sensor needs to be replaced, parts and labor typically range from around $100 to $250 depending on your location and service provider. A motor control board replacement is generally more expensive, with combined parts and labor costs often falling in the $200 to $450 range. Getting a professional diagnostic first helps avoid replacing parts unnecessarily.

Start by locating and removing all four shipping bolts from the rear of the washer if they have not already been taken out. If the machine is not new or the bolts are already removed, inspect the wiring harness connected to the motor speed sensor for damage or loose connections. If wiring looks intact, the speed sensor or motor control board may need to be tested and potentially replaced. A technician with the proper diagnostic tools can pinpoint which component is responsible.

A power reset may temporarily clear the error display, but if the underlying cause is still present, such as shipping bolts still installed or a failed sensor, the E16 code will return once the washer attempts to spin again. A reset alone is not a fix. The fault condition must be diagnosed and corrected for the error to stay cleared.
