GE Washer Error Code E18

E18 on a GE washer means the inverter heatsink has exceeded its safe operating temperature. The inverter controls the wash motor, and its heatsink is responsible for keeping it cool during operation. This fault is a protective shutdown to prevent damage to the inverter electronics. The most common trigger, especially on newly installed machines, is shipping bolts that were never removed.

You should stop using the washer until the cause of the E18 error is identified and resolved. The control system triggers this fault to protect the inverter from heat damage, and continuing to run the machine can cause permanent failure of the inverter board. Addressing the root cause first is the safer and more cost-effective approach.

If the fix is simply removing the shipping bolts or adjusting the installation environment, the repair costs nothing beyond your time. If the inverter board needs to be replaced, parts and labor costs can range from around $150 to over $400 depending on the model and service rates in your area.
