Error code 40 on a Maytag washer means the machine detected a load bound-up condition where the drum stopped tumbling because the paddles could not move. This is a protective shutdown designed to prevent motor or drive system damage. In most cases, the laundry has tangled or packed too tightly inside the drum. Redistributing the load and pressing Start will usually clear the code and resume the cycle.

A basic reset, such as unplugging the machine for a minute, may temporarily clear the display, but the code will return if the underlying cause is not addressed. Because code 40 is triggered by a physical condition inside the drum, the load must be redistributed before resuming the cycle. A reset alone without correcting the load will result in the washer shutting down again.

If the code is caused by a tangled load, there is no repair cost at all.
