The 5-1 error code on a Whirlpool dishwasher indicates a door latch or door switch circuit fault. Specifically, the control detected that the door was not confirmed as latched within 3 seconds of pressing Start/Resume. The door switch circuit sends a signal to the main control board confirming the door is properly closed and locked before the wash cycle can begin. When that confirmation signal does not arrive within the expected window, the control logs code 5-1 and halts operation to prevent the dishwasher from running with an unsecured door.

The root causes span mechanical and electrical categories. On the mechanical side, a worn or misaligned strike plate, a faulty latch assembly with excessive play, a misseated door gasket adding resistance, or dish racks that interfere with full door closure can all prevent the latch from engaging firmly. On the electrical side, a door switch with high internal resistance, corroded or loose connector pins in the door switch circuit, or switch contacts stuck in the open position can block the confirmation signal from ever reaching the control board even when the door is physically closed.

Diagnosis should begin with the mechanical components before moving to electrical testing. Inspect the strike plate alignment and test the force required to close the door. Confirm the door gasket is seated uniformly around the entire perimeter and check both dish racks for items that may be blocking full closure. After those checks, unplug the dishwasher and inspect all connectors in the door switch circuit for corrosion or looseness. If wiring checks out, test the door switch itself for proper continuity and resistance values. A faulty main control board is the least likely cause and should only be considered after all other components have been ruled out.
