Cooktop Service Manuals & Error Codes
Cooktop service divides into three categories: gas burner systems, electric radiant elements, and induction. Gas cooktops share the same ignition system architecture as gas ranges; spark module, igniter switches, and electrode assemblies. The most common failure is a dirty or cracked spark electrode, followed by clogged burner ports and failed spark module. Proper flame pattern diagnosis (even blue cones) tells you more than electrical testing on gas units.

Common Cooktop Problems
Gas burner won't ignite
Clean the igniter electrode tip and the ground electrode on the burner with alcohol and a soft brush. Check spark gap distance. Verify the burner cap is properly seated. A misaligned cap prevents the gas from reaching the spark. If all burners fail to spark, the spark module is likely failed. If one burner doesn't spark, check its individual igniter switch and electrode.
Electric element not heating
Test the element for continuity. Check the infinite switch or electronic relay that controls that zone. On glass-top models, inspect the element connector block for burn damage. Check the element limit switch; it opens if the element overheats and may not reset. On electronic models, verify the touch control registers the input and the relay board energizes.
Induction zone shows error or won't detect pan
Verify the cookware is induction-compatible using a magnet test. Check the glass surface for cracks. A cracked glass can trigger a safety shutdown. Test the induction coil for resistance and inspect the inverter board for blown IGBTs or swollen capacitors. Some units require a minimum pan diameter for each zone. A small pan on a large zone won't be detected.
Touch controls unresponsive or erratic
Clean the glass surface thoroughly; moisture, grease, and residue interfere with capacitive touch sensing. Check the ribbon cable connection between the touch panel and the control board. Power cycle the unit by turning off the breaker for 60 seconds. On some models, a failed touch controller will lock out all zones as a safety measure.
Gas burner flame too high or too low
Check the burner orifice for partial blockage (low flame) or the wrong orifice size (LP vs natural gas). Verify the gas pressure at the regulator; it should be 3.5" WC for natural gas or 10" WC for LP. Inspect the valve stem for proper operation through the full range of rotation. On sealed burner cooktops, food debris in the burner base affects flame distribution.
