What F6x means on a GE cooktop
The F6x error code on a GE Electronic Control Radiant Cooktop indicates a communication failure between the User Interface (UI) board and the Machine Control (MC) board. These two control boards work together continuously, with the UI board handling touch input and display functions while the Machine Control board governs the actual power delivery to the radiant heating elements. When the data signal between them is interrupted or absent, the cooktop registers the F6x fault and typically halts operation to prevent uncontrolled heating.
This communication breakdown is most often caused by a wiring issue between the two boards. Loose connectors, pinched wire harnesses, or corroded terminals on the ribbon cable or connector pins linking the UI to the Machine Control can all disrupt the data signal. Physical damage from heat exposure near the cooktop cavity is also a common culprit, as wire insulation can degrade over time and cause intermittent shorts or open circuits.
If wiring checks out and the fault persists, one of the two boards has likely failed internally. The Machine Control board is typically replaced first, as it is the primary processing unit governing cooktop operation. If replacing the Machine Control does not resolve the error, the Display Board located beneath the Touch Board is the next component to address. Both boards require powering down the unit before inspection or replacement.

Common causes of F6x
- 01
Loose or disconnected wiring harness
Wiring / connectionThe wire harness connecting the UI board to the Machine Control board may have worked loose, become unplugged, or have a damaged connector. Inspect all connectors between the two boards for secure seating and visible damage.
- 02
Corroded or damaged connector pins
Wiring / connectionHeat and moisture can cause the connector pins on the wiring harness to corrode or deform, breaking the data signal between boards. Look for discoloration, pitting, or bent pins at each connector end.
- 03
Failed Machine Control board
Part replacementThe Machine Control board may have experienced an internal failure that prevents it from sending or receiving communication signals. If wiring inspections reveal no issues, replacing the Machine Control board is the recommended next step.
- 04
Failed Display Board (under Touch Board)
Part replacementIf replacing the Machine Control does not clear the F6x code, the Display Board seated beneath the Touch Board may be faulty and unable to maintain the communication link. This board is replaced after the Machine Control has been ruled out.
- 05
Pinched or heat-damaged wiring
Part replacementWire insulation near the cooktop cavity can degrade from prolonged heat exposure, causing intermittent shorts or open circuits in the communication wiring. Look for any section of the harness that contacts a hot surface or shows visible insulation damage.
