The d36 code means the washer's control system detected that a key on the membrane switch keypad was registered as continuously pressed for more than 10 seconds. This triggers a stuck key fault because no button should remain held that long during normal use. The source of the problem can be a physically stuck button, a faulty ribbon cable connection, or a failing keypad assembly.

Clearing the error code may temporarily remove the d36 display, but the fault will return if the underlying cause is not corrected. If a key remains stuck or the ribbon cable connection is still compromised, the control board will detect the condition again and repost the error. A reset is a useful first step for diagnostics but is not a permanent fix on its own.

Repair costs depend on the root cause. If only the ribbon cable needs reseating, there may be no parts cost, though a service call fee applies if a technician performs the work. Replacing the membrane switch keypad assembly typically costs between 40 and 120 dollars for the part, plus labor. Replacing the user interface control board, if that proves to be the fault, generally runs higher, often in the range of 80 to 200 dollars for the part alone.

Some cases of d36 can be resolved without replacing parts. Start by clearing the error code and running Diagnostics Button Test P05 to identify which key is faulting. Check the ribbon cable connection at the user interface for proper seating. If a key is visibly stuck or the keypad has liquid damage, the membrane switch assembly will likely need replacement, which is a moderately involved repair requiring panel disassembly.

It is generally not recommended to run the washer while an active d36 fault is present. A stuck key can interfere with proper cycle control and user input processing. Additionally, if the cause is liquid intrusion near the control panel electronics, continued operation could worsen the damage. Address the fault before resuming normal use.
