Maytag Washer Error Code 5E

The 5E code means the washer detected a drain failure. The control board expects the water level to drop below the low water level reset point within 10 minutes during a drain cycle, and that did not happen. The fault points to a problem somewhere in the drain system, including the pump, hose, filter, or water level sensor. Pressing Start/Pause will attempt to resume the cycle, but recurring faults require physical inspection.

Pressing Start/Pause is the recommended first step and can clear the fault if the drain obstruction was temporary or intermittent. However, if the underlying cause such as a clogged filter or a failed pump is not resolved, the 5E code will return the next time the washer attempts to drain. A reset alone is not a repair.

Repair costs depend heavily on the cause. Clearing a clogged filter or repositioning a kinked hose costs nothing beyond your time. If the drain pump motor needs replacement, parts alone typically range from $30 to $100 depending on the model, with professional labor adding $100 to $200 or more. A faulty water level pressure switch is generally less expensive to replace than a pump motor.

Start by pressing Start/Pause to let the washer retry the drain cycle. If the error returns, check the drain pump filter for lint or debris, inspect the drain hose for kinks or blockages, and confirm the drain hose is installed at the correct height. If those checks come back clean, the drain pump motor or water level sensor may need to be tested and possibly replaced.

It is not advisable to continue running the washer while the 5E fault is active. The error means water may still be sitting in the tub, and running additional cycles without resolving the drain issue can put extra strain on the pump motor and potentially lead to water overflow or leaking. Address the drain problem before resuming normal use.
