Maytag Washer Error Code CE

CE stands for a water temperature fault on a Maytag washer. It appears during Delicates, Wool, or Hand Wash cycles when the washer detects incoming water above 40 degrees Celsius at the time of fill. Because those cycles require cold water to protect sensitive fabrics, the washer automatically drains and stops. The code is meant to alert you that the water temperature is incompatible with the selected cycle.

Resetting the washer by unplugging it for a minute or canceling the cycle may clear the code temporarily, but it will return on the next delicate cycle if the underlying cause is not resolved. The reset does not fix the water temperature condition that triggered the fault. Address the root cause first, such as correcting the hose connections or flushing the supply line, before restarting the cycle.

If the fix is simply correcting reversed hoses, there is no parts cost involved. Replacing a water inlet valve typically runs in the range of $30 to $90 for the part alone, with additional labor if a technician is hired. A temperature sensor replacement is generally in the $20 to $60 range for the part. A control board replacement is the most expensive possibility, often ranging from $100 to $300 or more depending on the model.

Start by checking that your hot and cold inlet hoses are connected to the correct ports on the back of the washer. If the hoses are correct, run the cold water tap near the washer for about a minute before starting the cycle to flush any warm water from the supply line. If the error persists, inspect the water inlet valve for signs of crossflow, and consider testing or replacing the water temperature sensor.

The washer's automatic drain response is a protective measure, so your clothing is generally not at immediate risk once the code appears and the drain runs. However, you should not continue selecting delicate cycles without resolving the issue, as the fault will repeat. For other cycle types that tolerate warmer water, the machine may operate normally, but the underlying cause should still be diagnosed.
