The oL code stands for overloaded. The machine or motor control has detected that the drum contains more weight than the washer is rated to handle, or that the basket cannot disengage from the drive mechanism due to mechanical friction. The washer stops the cycle to protect the motor and drive components from damage.

Unplugging the washer for a minute and restarting it may temporarily clear the code, but the oL fault will return if the underlying condition is not addressed. If the cause is an overloaded drum, reducing the load size is all that is needed. If the cause is a mechanical fault in the drive system, a reset alone will not resolve it.

If the cause is simply an overloaded drum, there is no repair cost. If a mechanical component like a drive bearing or basket engagement part has failed, parts and labor costs typically range from around $100 to $300 or more depending on the specific component, local labor rates, and the age of the machine. A faulty motor control board replacement will generally fall at the higher end of that range.

Start by removing a portion of the laundry, redistributing the remaining items evenly in the drum, and restarting the cycle. If the code clears, the cause was a true overload. If the code returns with a normal-sized load, inspect the drive mechanism and tub bearing for binding, friction, or worn components that may be preventing the basket from spinning freely.

The washer stops the cycle specifically to prevent motor and drive component damage, so you should not force the machine to continue running while the fault is active. Continuing to run the washer under an overload or with a binding drive mechanism can accelerate wear on the motor, bearings, and control board. Address the cause before resuming normal use.
