What E76 means on a Frigidaire washer
The E76 error code appears on select higher-end Frigidaire washer models and indicates that the NTC (Negative Temperature Coefficient) thermistor monitoring the cold water inlet valve has detected a temperature reading outside of its accepted operating range. NTC thermistors change resistance in response to temperature, and the control board uses this resistance reading to verify that water entering through the cold valve is within expected parameters. When the reading falls outside these limits, either too high or too low, the board triggers E76 to flag the anomaly.
The most common cause of this fault is a simple installation error: the hot and cold water supply hoses have been connected to the wrong inlet valves. If the hot water hose is feeding into the cold water inlet, the thermistor on that valve will detect temperatures far above what is considered normal for cold water, immediately pushing the reading out of range. This is the first thing to check before any disassembly or component testing.
If the hoses are correctly connected and the error persists, the fault may lie with the NTC thermistor itself, its associated wiring harness, or the cold water inlet valve assembly. A failed or drifting thermistor can report resistance values that correspond to temperatures outside normal limits even when water supply conditions are correct. Wiring issues such as damaged insulation, corroded terminals, or a loose connector between the thermistor and the control board can produce the same out-of-range signal. In less common cases, the main control board may be misreading a valid thermistor signal due to its own internal fault.

Common causes of E76
- 01
Hot and cold water hoses reversed
Wiring / connectionIf the hot supply hose is connected to the cold water inlet, the thermistor will detect water temperatures far above the normal cold range and trigger E76. Inspect the hose connections at both the washer and the wall supply valves to confirm correct routing.
- 02
Faulty NTC thermistor on cold water inlet valve
Part replacementThe thermistor may have failed or drifted out of calibration, causing it to report resistance values that correspond to temperatures outside acceptable limits even when water supply conditions are normal. Testing the thermistor resistance with a multimeter and comparing it to expected values will confirm this fault.
- 03
Damaged or corroded wiring harness
Wiring / connectionBroken wires, corroded terminals, or a loose connector between the thermistor and the control board can cause the board to receive an out-of-range signal. Inspect the harness along its full length for visible damage and check that all connectors are fully seated.
- 04
Defective cold water inlet valve assembly
Part replacementIf the inlet valve assembly itself is faulty and the thermistor is integrated into or mounted on it, replacing the entire valve assembly may be necessary after other causes have been ruled out.
- 05
Faulty main control board
Part replacementIn rare cases, the control board may misinterpret a valid thermistor signal and trigger E76 without an actual temperature problem. This is typically diagnosed only after all other components have been tested and found to be within specification.
