EF1 is a drain warning code indicating the washer detected one or more draining phases that took longer than expected, specifically more than 20 seconds during draining after rinsing. The code appears at the end of the cycle rather than stopping the machine mid-program. It points to a restriction somewhere in the drain system, most commonly a blocked drain filter. Cleaning the filter is the recommended first step.

Because EF1 is a warning that appears after the cycle completes rather than a hard fault that stops operation, the washer is still functional. However, continuing to run the machine without addressing the drainage restriction puts extra strain on the drain pump and can shorten its service life. It is best to clean the drain filter and check the hose before running additional loads.

If the cause is simply a clogged drain filter, the repair costs nothing beyond a few minutes of your time. If the drain hose needs replacement, parts typically run in the range of $15 to $40. A failed drain pump is the most expensive scenario, with parts generally ranging from $50 to $120 and additional labor costs if a technician is needed, bringing the total repair to roughly $100 to $250 depending on your location and service rates.

Start by locating the drain filter access panel at the lower front of the washer, placing a towel and shallow pan underneath, and slowly unscrewing the filter cap to let residual water drain out. Remove the filter, clean off all debris under running water, and check the filter housing cavity for any trapped objects. Also inspect the drain hose along its full length for kinks or blockages. Reinstall the filter securely and run a short cycle to confirm the error does not return.

Unplugging the washer or cycling the power may clear the displayed code temporarily, but the underlying cause will remain. If the drain system is still restricted, the EF1 warning will return the next time the washer detects a prolonged drain phase. A lasting fix requires physically cleaning the filter and removing any blockage from the drain path.
