What 16 means on a GE refrigerator
Error code 16 on a GE refrigerator indicates that the PC (condenser or printed circuit) fan motor is drawing more electrical current than the control system expects during normal operation. The control module continuously monitors fan motor current draw, and when that value exceeds the acceptable threshold, it triggers this fault code to protect both the fan circuit and the broader power supply from damage caused by excessive load.
The two primary causes behind this fault are a wiring short and a mechanically or electrically failing fan motor. A short in the wiring harness between the power/control module and the fan motor creates an abnormal low-resistance path, which allows excess current to flow through the circuit. Alternatively, if the fan motor itself has deteriorated bearings, a seized rotor, or failing internal windings, the motor will work harder to spin, pulling more current in the process. Either condition produces the same overcurrent signal that triggers code 16.
Diagnosis begins at the wiring and connections. Both ends of the harness should be inspected, including the connector at the fan motor and the connector at the power or control module. Look for pinched wires, chafed insulation, corrosion at the terminals, or any sign of heat damage. If the wiring checks out visually and electrically, the fan motor itself is the next suspect and will require testing or replacement to resolve the fault.

Common causes of 16
- 01
Failing PC Fan Motor
Part replacementA worn or seized fan motor draws excess current as it struggles to spin. Signs include unusual noise from the fan, slow blade rotation, or the fan not spinning at all.
- 02
Shorted Wiring Harness
Wiring / connectionA pinched, chafed, or damaged wire in the harness connecting the fan to the control module can create a short circuit that causes abnormal current draw. Inspect the full length of the wiring for damage, especially near sharp edges or tight routing points.
- 03
Corroded or Loose Connector Terminals
Wiring / connectionCorroded or poorly seated connector terminals at either the fan motor or the power/control module can introduce resistance or intermittent shorts that affect current readings. Clean or reseat the connectors as part of the initial check.
- 04
Obstruction Blocking Fan Blade
Wiring / connectionDebris or ice buildup that physically blocks the fan blade forces the motor to work against resistance, increasing current draw. Check for anything preventing the blade from spinning freely.
- 05
Faulty Power/Control Module
Part replacementIf the wiring and the fan motor both test as acceptable, the power or control module itself may be misreading current or delivering incorrect voltage to the fan circuit. This is the least common cause but should be considered after other components are ruled out.
