What 88/EE means on a LG refrigerator
The 88/EE error code on an LG refrigerator indicates insufficient cooling in the lower compartment, triggered by a fault in one of two sensor circuits: the lower part interior sensor or the lower part cooling sensor. These sensors continuously monitor temperature conditions inside the lower section of the refrigerator. When the control board detects an open circuit or an out-of-range signal from either sensor, it logs this code and may reduce or halt cooling operation in the lower zone to prevent component damage or food safety issues.
The most common electrical failure point is a cut or broken sensor line within the wiring harness that connects the sensors to the Case display board. A severed line registers as an open circuit, which the control board interprets as a sensor malfunction. Physical damage from ice buildup, repeated door impact, or rodent activity can sever these lines. Sensor resistance values that fall outside the expected range due to a failed thermistor will also trigger the code, even if the wiring is intact.
Diagnosing this error requires inspecting both the lower interior sensor and the lower cooling sensor, along with their associated wiring runs back to the Case display. If the sensor line is confirmed cut, the Case display assembly requires replacement as part of the repair. If the wiring is intact but sensor readings are abnormal, the individual sensor or sensors will need to be replaced to restore proper lower compartment temperature monitoring and cooling function.

Common causes of 88/EE
- 01
Cut or broken sensor wiring line
Part replacementThe wire connecting the lower interior or cooling sensor to the Case display board may be severed or damaged, creating an open circuit. Inspect the wiring harness along the lower compartment for visible breaks, pinched sections, or damage from ice or physical impact.
- 02
Failed lower part interior sensor
Part replacementThe thermistor in the lower interior section may have failed internally, sending an out-of-range resistance signal to the control board even when the wiring is intact. A multimeter reading of the sensor resistance that falls outside the expected specification confirms this failure.
- 03
Failed lower part cooling sensor
Part replacementThe lower cooling sensor monitors temperature at or near the evaporator or cooling loop serving the lower compartment. If its thermistor element has degraded, it will produce an incorrect or no signal, triggering the error code.
- 04
Faulty Case display board
Part replacementIf the sensor lines are confirmed cut at or near the Case display assembly, the entire Case display unit requires replacement since the sensor lines are integrated into that component. A damaged connector or failed input circuit on the board can also produce this error.
- 05
Loose or corroded sensor connector
Wiring / connectionA connector that has worked loose or developed corrosion at the sensor plug can intermittently interrupt the sensor signal, causing the control board to log the 88/EE code. Unplugging and reseating connectors along the lower sensor circuit may resolve an intermittent fault.
