What 15 means on a Samsung air conditioner
Error code 15 on a Samsung air conditioner indicates an abnormal rise in heatsink temperature within the outdoor unit. The heatsink is the aluminum fin structure mounted directly to the inverter compressor drive module (IPM) or power transistor assembly, and its purpose is to dissipate heat generated during high-current switching operations. When the heatsink temperature sensor detects readings that exceed the acceptable threshold, the unit triggers this fault code and shuts down to prevent damage to the power electronics.
The most common root cause of this fault is inadequate airflow through the outdoor unit. Blocked condenser coils, obstructed air discharge paths, or a failed outdoor fan motor can all cause heat to build up on the heatsink rapidly. The fan motor connector CN54 is a primary inspection point because a loose or corroded connection can interrupt power to the fan, allowing the heatsink to overheat even when ambient temperatures are moderate. A failed running capacitor can also prevent the fan motor from starting or running at proper speed, producing the same overheating effect.
Relay RY503 controls power delivery in the outdoor unit circuit and should be checked for proper operation and contact integrity. If the relay is stuck open or has pitted contacts, the fan or other cooling components may not receive consistent power. Beyond electrical components, physical blockages such as debris, vegetation, or snow packed against the outdoor unit grille are straightforward causes that should be ruled out before replacing any parts.

Common causes of 15
- 01
Outdoor unit airflow blockage
Wiring / connectionDebris, dirt buildup, vegetation, or other obstructions around the outdoor unit restrict condenser airflow and trap heat at the heatsink. Inspect all four sides of the unit and the top discharge grille for blockages.
- 02
Failed or disconnected outdoor fan motor
Part replacementIf the outdoor fan motor has failed or its connector CN54 is loose or corroded, the fan cannot move air across the heatsink, causing rapid temperature rise. Check that CN54 is fully seated and test the motor for continuity.
- 03
Failed running capacitor
Part replacementThe running capacitor provides the phase shift needed to start and sustain the outdoor fan motor. A weak or shorted capacitor causes the fan to run slowly or not at all, reducing heatsink cooling significantly.
- 04
Faulty relay RY503
Part replacementRelay RY503 controls power delivery within the outdoor unit circuit. Pitted, fused, or stuck contacts can cause intermittent or total loss of power to the fan or related cooling components, triggering the heatsink overheat fault.
- 05
Dirty or fouled condenser coil
Wiring / connectionA condenser coil clogged with dust, pet hair, or cottonwood reduces heat transfer efficiency, forcing the heatsink to operate at elevated temperatures even when the fan is running normally. Clean the coil with a coil cleaner and low-pressure rinse.
