E396 indicates a DC voltage sensor error for the second fan motor (Fan2). The system monitors the DC-link voltage used to drive the fan through the inverter stage, and this code appears when that sensor reading is absent or out of range. The unit protects itself by suspending normal fan operation until the fault is resolved.

It is not recommended to continue operating the unit with an active E396 error. The system has detected a fault in the fan motor voltage sensing circuit, which means Fan2 may not be operating correctly. Running the unit without proper fan function can cause overheating of internal components and lead to more serious damage.

Repair costs vary depending on the root cause. If only the wiring harness needs reseating or replacement, costs are typically in the range of $50 to $150 for a service call. If a fan PCB or inverter PCB replacement is required, parts and labor combined can range from $200 to $600 or more depending on the specific model and local labor rates.
