The G5 code means the electronic expansion valve in the outdoor unit has failed to close properly, and this condition was detected more than once. The expansion valve controls refrigerant flow through the system, and when it cannot close, refrigerant pressure balance is disrupted. The system logs this code and shuts down to protect the compressor from damage caused by uncontrolled refrigerant flow.

It is not safe to continue operating the unit while the G5 error is active. An expansion valve that cannot close allows unrestricted refrigerant flow, which can cause liquid refrigerant to flood the compressor and lead to compressor damage or failure. The system is designed to shut down when this fault is detected, and bypassing that shutdown could result in costly component damage.

A power reset may temporarily clear the error code, but because the G5 fault only triggers after the condition is detected more than once, the underlying hardware fault will cause it to return quickly. Resetting the unit without addressing the faulty expansion valve, wiring, or control board is not a solution and risks further damage to the system.

Some preliminary checks, such as inspecting the wiring harness for visible damage or loose connectors at the outdoor unit, can be done without specialized tools. However, testing the EEV coil resistance, diagnosing the control board outputs, and replacing refrigerant-side components all require refrigerant handling certification and professional equipment. Most homeowners should contact a licensed HVAC technician for this repair.
